From Cisco to Red Hat

Posted by Avital Pinnick on May 19, 2017

Same satellite dish, as NDS and Cisco. I’m not sure whether this dish will be around next year, so I’m glad I got these photos. If you’re wondering how I did it without a helicopter, HR asked me to record the changeover of the signs and dishes. I spent two days taking photos on the roof and in front of the building.

Just before Passover I was laid off by Cisco. It was hard, not having looked for a job, um, ever…. Seriously, my previous jobs all fell into my lap. Of course I had the usual worries about my age, my less-than-fluent Hebrew, and my hodgepodge training. I sometimes tell people I went to YouTube Uni to learn engineering. I decided to return to technical writing because (a) there are way too many good engineers looking for jobs and I can’t compete with eng. degrees and certs, (b) I stand out more as a tech writer with Integration&Testing and DevOps experience than I do as an engineer who can write well, and (c) bottom line: I can earn more as a senior technical writer than as a junior engineer.

I started interviewing at two companies, a well-known automotive tech company in Jerusalem and Red Hat in Raanana. I was concerned about the killer commute, living in Maale Adumim and not having a driver’s license, but Red Hat’s policy is to allow workers to work from home, especially if they live far from the office. They made me a very good offer and I’ve accepted.

I finish at Cisco on May 28 and start at Red Hat on June 5. Sometimes things really do work out for the best!

Yinnon’s Last Day

Posted by Avital Pinnick on January 12, 2012

Clearing out the corner

You can tell a lot about a man by his choice of headgear. Masha brought Yinnon a daisy crown for his last day at work.

For four years I’ve been photographing and blogging about my amazing officemates, Yinnon and Masha. Now our time together is over. Masha will still be here. Yinnon, however, is moving to New Zealand with his wife to do a Ph.D. in neuro-biology, specifically, pattern recognition in jumping spiders. He will be gone for four years and we will miss him!

Here’s Masha at this morning’s organized farewell party in the dairy cafeteria. Whiskey and tequila are part of a balanced breakfast.

Whiskey is an important part of breakfast

My going-away gift was a CD of photos and videos that I’ve made of Yinnon and Masha since 2009. Yinnon said that having an in-house paparazza was one of the best parts of his job. He said he’s never been photographed so much before and had such a good collection of portraits. 🙂 When he was single he used some of my photos for his on-line dating profiles.

He’s been an amazing officemate, always interesting, cheerful, helpful, and very funny. He’s a recognized tarantula expert (and former breeder), programmer, and caterer. I’ve learned a great deal from sharing a room with him for four years. This is the first photo I ever took of Yinnon, a snapshot done with the Canon S5IS:

Bowler Hat

This is one of my favourite photos, taken a few hours before his wedding. Masha threw her arms around Yinnon and Rinat looked like she wanted to smash her bouquet over Masha’s head (they’re good friends, by the way).

Stop the wedding!!!!

Finally, this is the first cooking video we ever made together, “How to make boiled kubbeh.” We never did get around to making the meatball video. Maybe someday. Best of luck in New Zealand!

Summer Party at Work

Summer Party at Work

Five hours for a party at work? OK, that leaves two hours at the beginning of the day for real work and two hours at the end to sober up or sleep it off. A little controlled debauchery is good for morale around here. I photographed Masha, drinking beer and cooling off in the fountain, and only noticed later that her sunglasses were reflecting the beach balls in the water. So the photo has been cropped considerably.

A friend has assured me that bouncing around in an air-filled beach ball in a pool is a lot less fun than it looks. You can’t keep your balance, so you’re constantly falling over, it’s hot as hell in there, and by the end of the experience you’re running out of oxygen. So I would rather photograph it than do it. The guy on the right, a manager in QA, wasn’t doing a shoulder stand intentionally. He just fell over in that position while I was photographing him.

Masha again, rappelling down the side of the building from the sixth floor. She says, “Everyone should jump off the roof of their work building at least once. It’s very therapeutic.” Some of my braver coworkers were riding the “Omega Zip” from the sixth floor, sort of a slide down a cable to the ground level. I don’t recall how they landed but they survived the trip.

My main complaint was that there weren’t enough manicurists. I managed to get a 3:20 p.m. appointment to have my nails done. I also had a massage and decorated a straw hat. I didn’t bother with the decorated flip-flops because I don’t usually wear them.

Waffles made on the spot, with chocolate, syrup, various things to sprinkle on top. They also served fruit wedges, fruit drinks with liqueurs and rum, beer on tap, popcorn, corn on the cob, and soft ice cream. How are we supposed to have room left for lunch?

Yinnon’s 30th Birthday

Posted by Avital Pinnick on December 24, 2009

Yinnon's Birthday

Spider cake courtesy of yours truly. What else would one make for a spider expert? It’s a classic chocolate cake with chocolate icing, orange and plain coconut to simulate the colouring of the Mexican Red-Kneed Tarantula, Twizzler legs and fangs, and Jelly Belly eyes. Eight of them.

But all good things must come to an end…. Our line is expanding and Yinnon and Masha are moving to another room upstairs. We had some good times in this little room at the end of the hall!
