“Solaris,” Hurva Synagogue – Jerusalem Festival of Light 2017

Posted by Avital Pinnick on July 6, 2017

“Solaris” is a video-mapping installation by Visualsupport, Poland, incorporating the Hurva Synagogue. The festival brochure describes it as the show’s “world premiere in Jerusalem.” It was pretty, but not amazing. Scroll down for the video.

Concert and Candles in Zedekiah’s Cave – Jerusalem Festival of Light 2017

Posted by Avital Pinnick on July 6, 2017

Where else could you see a piano concert at the bottom of a 2000-year-old cave? “Interactive Shadows” (Studio Insight, Guy Romem, Israel) refers to the cameras set along the path to the bottom of the cave. The cameras project images of the viewers on the walls, with different effects (line drawings, coloured silhouettes, etc.).

The musicians are listed as Yoel Shemesh and Achiya Asher Cohen Alloro. I have no idea who was playing that evening. At one point there was a loud cracking sound. The pianist, without missing a beat, looked over his shoulder at a bench that had collapsed in the middle from the weight of the children.

The Tribe – Fire Dancers at the Jerusalem Festival of Light 2017

Posted by Avital Pinnick on July 4, 2017

Fire and dance show called “The Tribe” (Lital Natanzon, Israel), in the open auditorium on Tsanchanim Road. I can’t say that I noticed any characters or encounters with figures from other worlds, but it was fun to watch. There are only two performances, at 8:30 and 9:15. I recommend you try to get there early, maybe first on your agenda, because it does get crowded.

Long exposures are not easy when handheld at a significant distance.

I call this one Headless Nick. Strange effect!

Children’s Folk Dance Group, Yom Atzmaut 2016

Posted by Avital Pinnick on May 17, 2016

This was a more traditional folk dance performance. Unfortunately, I don’t know the name of this group but they danced beautifully. The girls are so light on their feet that they move like gazelles. Very few boys seem to participate in the younger groups (I have a son–folk dance doesn’t have quite the same cachet for young boys as soccer and karate….). This group had two male dancers.

Hutzot Hayotzer 2014: Eli Avisera and the Wood Craft Center

Posted by Avital Pinnick on August 28, 2014

IMG_7671.jpg

Eli Avisera was back this year, giving wood-working demonstrations. He founded the Wood Craft Center in 1988 and gives courses. One of my coworkers took a course from him and enjoyed it very much. I’m always fascinated by how he can take a block of wood and turn it into a gorgeous box within minutes. His work is magical (check out the video below).

Hutzot Hayotzer 2014: Eviatar Banai

Posted by Avital Pinnick on August 15, 2014

IMG_7595.jpg

One aspect of Hutzot Hayotzer (Jerusalem International Arts & Crafts Fair) that we always look forward to is the concerts. For 65 NIS (less than $20), it’s a bargain (if you don’t want to hear the concert you can buy a cheaper ticket for 50 NIS). The last evening we went (Aug. 11), I wasn’t able to visit the craft stalls at because we went to two performances: Tav Cafe, followed by Eviatar Banai. Eviatar Banai is a 41-year-old hozer betshuvah (returnee to Judaism) with a clear tenor voice and a soft rock/ballad style. He belongs to the Banai family,  which has produced a large number of Israeli performers.

The concert was sold out, another reason to buy or pick up your tickets early. Mayor Nir Barkat, in his opening remarks, said that each night of Hutzot Hayotzer was dedicated to a different division of the IDF. (We were wondering why the Armored Corp insignia was displayed on the screen before the concert.) He was followed by a high-ranking officer from the Armored Corp, who gave a short speech about how life has to go on (that division lost a lot of soldiers in Gaza) and we have to keep singing.

I made a short video of one of songs near the end. Around the 45-second mark, he segues from rock to a hassidic nigun and lots of people got up to dance. It was good to forget the war for a while.

Hutzot Hayotzer 2014: Flamenco Natural

Posted by Avital Pinnick on August 14, 2014

IMG_7324.jpg

Flamenco Natural, led by Sharon Saguy, appeared on the small stage of Hutzot Hayotzer (Jerusalem International Arts & Crafts Festival), May 11, 2014. Flamenco is quite popular in Israel. If I were tall, skinny, and blessed with excellent coordination, I’d sign up for classes immediately. <sigh!> Flamenco is beautiful to watch and tricky to photograph without a tripod.

Video: Fire Dance in Tzahal Square, Jerusalem

Posted by Avital Pinnick on August 1, 2013

I was in the middle of posting the Jerusalem Light Festival photos when I got side-tracked by a weekend trip to Manchester and Dublin. This woman dancing with a burning hoop was not part of the Light Festival but she was performing in Tsahal Square at the same time. I thought she was quite good and was glad I could get a video of the whole routine.

Video: “Jerusalem in Sand”

Posted by Avital Pinnick on June 25, 2013

“Jerusalem in Sand,” performed by Sheli Ben Nun, to music by Sussita (Israel). This is a short section of the story of David and Bathsheva. The two male profiles depict King David and Uriah the Hittite, with Bathsheva in the background, between them.
