By now, this cathedral and palace must look rather familiar. 🙂 At the top of the Old Town Hall tower, you can walk all the way around. The view on a clear day is superb. I should have realised at the time how lucky I was because the following week the skies were very hazy.

At first I thought that these buildings at the edge of the square were built in front of the entrance of the church. Nope. You enter the Tyn church by walking along the alley narrow beside the pink building, through a tiny courtyard, and into the nave itself. Apparently there were fewer building restrictions in the 16th century.

Dom Tower of Utrecht

Posted by Avital Pinnick on May 19, 2013

Dom Tower of Utrecht

If you spend any length of time in Utrecht you will have ample opportunity to photograph its largest landmark, the Dom Tower (cathedral tower). At 368 meters, it is one of the largest European towers constructed during the 14th century. At one time it was part of the cathedral. However, the unfinished nave collapsed in 1674 and the tower has been free-standing ever since.

It has an impressive carillon of 52 bells. Warning: if you are a light sleeper, do not book a room close to the Dom. Those bells ring all night, playing melodies every hour. I was about a kilometer away, so the noise didn’t bother me, but one of my coworkers came to work looking haggard and mumbling, “The bells, the bells….”

The next shot was taken from the plaza, which would have originally been inside the nave.

The remaining cathedral building still has the flat wall where the collapsed nave was closed off.

I was playing around with the angles to show the separation of the two buildings.

Video: View from Torre Grossa, San Gimignano

Posted by Avital Pinnick on February 17, 2013

I didn’t have the time to take a photographic panorama of the view from the top of the tower, so you’ll have to make do with a video instead.

So that’s it! This is the last posting for our Italian vacation. It only took eight months to get them on-line. 🙂

I’ve created a Photography page and will gradually move my photography-related blog postings there. In the meantime, the Italy section is up to date. Eventually I plan to add the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv postings.

Torre Grossa, San Gimignano

Posted by Avital Pinnick on February 17, 2013

San Gimignano

The Torre Grossa is the tallest surviving tower of San Gimignano. There is no elevator, so you have to climb all 54 meters on foot. The inside of the tower has been reinforced with a steel staircase winding around the interior.

The view at the top makes it all worth while….

I noticed a sculpture of a naked man on top of a nearby tower.

The Piazza della Cisterna has a beautiful old well. The first photo (above) was taken through the arch of the well.
