Super Moon over Maale Adumim

Supermoon over Maale Adumim

Although I had a tripod with me, this was taken by hand, braced against a fence, as I was sprinting to get to lower ground. It was a bit hazy when the moon cleared the horizon, so the moon wasn’t very impressive (moon too dark, sky too light). Next time I’ll try to photograph from a lower point so that I can get the moon clearing some buildings when it’s brighter. Unfortunately, I don’t live near the Taj Mahal or Acropolis, so the foreground will probably be apartment buildings.

Moon Setting over Mount of Olives

Moon setting over Mount of Olives

I was washing dishes this morning, around 6:15 a.m. The full moon was very low in the sky, so I grabbed my camera, mini-tripod, and a 250 mm lens. This photo has been cropped quite a lot because it’s not that big a lens and the horizon is over a mile away. The tower of the Augusta Victoria Hospital is barely silhouetted by the moon. Hmmm. I suppose I could try to recreate the Amman twin towers shot with the full moon and this tower. Just have to ask my friendly neighbourhood moon-watcher if he would mind doing the calculations.

New Moon Setting

Posted by Avital Pinnick on April 15, 2010

It’s not as good a shot as I’d hoped to get but I did learn a lot about how to approach this kind of shot in the future. This photo required a lot of post-processing, so I’m very glad I shot it in RAW. You can see the shadow of the earth on the moon. This was taken during a brief window when the new moon was visible just after it cleared the clouds above the horizon. 7:44 p.m., ISO 400, f/5.6, 2″, 250mm.
