Better Colour Palette for Flash

Posted by Avital Pinnick on September 25, 2011

New Palette (Flash)

Coming out of hibernation to say that I just found this great colour palette here. If you work in Flash, you probably don’t find the default colour palette all that user friendly. I was watching a video by Dermot O’ Connor (Animation Tips and Tricks with Flash Professional) on Lynda.com. Lynda.com is a fabulous site if you ever need to pick up new software skills in a hurry. Basic subscription is $25/month and it has lots of fun stuff, including tons of courses on aspects of photography, Photoshop, various programming languages, marketing your business on Facebook and with Twitter.

Since I don’t have the premium subscription I couldn’t download the palette in O’Conner’s exercise files, but I managed to find it via a Google search. Just download the zip file, extract the *.clr file. In Flash, open the Swatches panel and click Replace Colors on the dropdown menu. Click Save as Default. If you ever want to go back to the old palette, click Web 216.

Two Short Flash Animations

Posted by Avital Pinnick on January 23, 2011

I just figured out how to upload a couple Flash animations. I’ve been dabbling in Flash since 2004, although I really haven’t done much with it until recently, when I got more into ActionScript 3.0 programming.

At work, I’m taking a Flash course for beginners. I’m not enjoying it very much, partly because I’m overqualified and partly because my Hebrew is not very good (the instructor is very knowledgeable but he mumbles and talks very fast). This first animation is a 7-second one that I put together when we were learning how to animate gradiants. On the other hand, because I normally work with boxes, lines, and rather boring animations (but a lot of programming to show different screens), drawing animations from scratch is new for me.

This second video is a short animation I made to illustrate a talk I gave to our technical writing group at work. I spoke about the history of Flash, while moving through the animation with the spacebar. Later I added a very simple control console (just a shiny Play button) and published it as an Adobe AIR application. I gave a demo on that to a larger group of technical writers to show how self-installing tools could be designed with Flash.

This animation was done very quickly, in about 2 hours. If I had had more time, I would have liked to have had the big Adobe fish swallowing the little Macromedia fish, but there wasn’t time to animate their mouths.

More Flash Experiments – Asparagus and My Son

Posted by Avital Pinnick on March 26, 2010

Asparagus

More water dripping on vegetables! This week’s victim is asparagus. Photo was cropped and contrast was increased so you see less of my yucky sink. No sharpening applied.

We’re almost finished Passover preparations, at least the ones that can be done before Shabbat. My son had finished all the essential chores, so I gave him a non-essential one, tidying the linen closet. He refolded all the sheets and towels, pillowcases, handkerchiefs, and tablecloths so that they are in neat stacks.

Here’s a photo taken with the built-in flash of my camera:

And here’s one taken with the Speedlite 580, bounced off the ceiling, no diffuser. What a difference! Neither photo was post-processed or cropped.

Red Pepper

Pepper and Water

Playing with my new Speedlite 580 EXII. Because I spend a good part of Friday in the kitchen I tend to photograph vegetables. They’re handy, they’re photogenic. I’ve taken pictures of cauliflower, fennel, beets, and probably others I’ve forgotten. I made stir-fry vegetables to go with the chicken, so the red pepper was today’s candidate. I cut it in half, stuck in a bowl, and turned on the tap.  The grey background below is my medium non-stick frying pan.
