Ira Glass on Working through Discouragement
Posted by Avital Pinnick on March 7, 2010
This American Life is one of my favourite podcasts because it explores such a wide range of topics, from laugh-out-loud silly to extremely moving and profound.
This video interview segment with presenter Ira Glass is about working through that depressing period when your taste outstrips your abilities (be it in photography, art, blogging, or whatever). It’s a useful reminder that everyone — absolutely everyone who works seriously in a creative field — goes through these periods. Eventually you reach the end of the tunnel, if you’re willing to work through them instead of giving up.

Thanks for sharing, Avital. I agree what we can do is just do lots of work. I believe it is the only way I would mature artistically and keep up with my visions (or taste). I have always been writing and talking about learning and developing techniques and improving designing skills, all those that are essential in realizing the visions in my head.

Am so glad you posted this, thanks. I listen to Ira frequently and am usually nodding along, but had missed this one.
